Controversy surrounds burning of Imo new hotel

Imo CP, Abutu Yaro

A new hotel was burnt on Monday in the Nekede area of Owerri, Imo State.

The Goodview Hotel, which was built about a year ago, is located in the Umuoma area very close to the Federal University of Technology and the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri.

Our correspondent learnt that the hotel was razed between 2am and 3am.

While some residents said the hotel was attacked, others said the incident was as a result of an electrical fault.

The development heightened tension in the state as residents observed the sit-at-home ordered by the Indigenous People of Biafra.

A source, who did not want his name mentioned, told our correspondent that nobody in the neighbourhood came out while the fire was raging, because of the heightened insecurity in the state.

Another source told our correspondent that an air conditioner in one of the rooms exploded and the resulting fire burnt the hotel.

“Everyone thought that it was an attack by hoodlums, but I have been told that an air conditioner exploded and the resulting fire razed the hotel. This is very unfortunate. This is somebody’s sweat. It has not been more than a year since the hotel was built,” the source stated.

Our correspondent saw footage of how the hotel was destroyed by the raging fire.

When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Bala Elkana, said he had not been briefed on the development.
